MEDAN–USU: In order to actualize changes in work system and culture, to support a more productive, systematic, and efficient human resource performance, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) held counseling on the implementation of the 5S+ Work Culture Program. The activity took place in the Academic Senate Room on the 3rd floor of the USU Main Administration Building on Friday (4/10/2019). It was opened by the Vice-Rector II, Prof. Dr. dr. Muhammad Fidel Ganis Siregar, M.Ked.(O.G.), Sp.O.G.(K).
5S 5 The event presented three speakers, namely the Vice-Rector IV Prof. Dr. Ir. Bustami Syam, M.S.M.E., Head of Reduction and Casting Department of PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminum (Persero) Firman Ashad, S.T., and Quality Assurance Junior Manager of PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminum (Persero) Yudi Abdillah, A.Md. The participants consisted of the USU Vice-Rector V Ir. Luhut Sihombing, M.P., Board of Directors of USU Hospital and USU Dental Hospital, deans, vice deans, heads of departments, heads of study programs, and leaders of institutions and working unit within USU.
5S 3 In his speech, the Vice-Rector II said that this counseling activity was one of the opportunities for the academicians of Universitas Sumatera Utara to learn to quickly rise and progress through Japanese methods used to transform itself into a developed country.
5S 9 “Discipline and hard work are the two main keys of Japanese to achieve success. These two things must be applied in our daily life and work culture,” said Prof. Fidel.
5S 2 Furthermore, he said that the success of Universitas Sumatera Utara this year was marked by its entry to the 1st cluster of Indonesian higher education rankings in the ranking system formed by the Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education. USU has successfully reached the 13th rank, moving up two places from last year. However, this is not the final goal.
5S 4 “There are still many issues and shortcomings that we must fix together. There are still many things that we can achieve with our collective determination and hard work. To make this happen, we held this counseling to bring good and significant changes. This will ultimately be able to provide significant progress in all sectors in Universitas Sumatera Utara if applied consistently and with full awareness and based on responsibility,” he said.
5S 10 He hopes the forum would provide a lot of useful information for the development and management of existing resources. The main point was to change the way of thinking and the existing work culture to be more efficient, effective, and on target, in line with the concept of 5S+ work culture.
5S 1 The 5S Work Culture is a method of intensive arrangement and maintenance of work areas originating from Japan, which is applied by management to maintain order, efficiency, and discipline at worksites while improving overall performance. Currently, the 5S Work Culture has developed into a 5S+ Work Culture. The 5S+ Work Culture consists of Seiri (Sorting Out), Seiton (Arranging Neatly), Seiso (Sweeping Cleanly), Seiketsu (Standardizing Working Procedure), Shitsuke (Cultivating Awareness), Safety, and Security.
5S 11 The 5S+ implementation must be carried out sequentially. If the first stage (seiri) is not done well, then the next stage will not be implemented optimally, and so on. The 5S + work culture must be seen in the framework of Total Productive Maintenance (TPM). The implementation process can take up to a year or even more. In general, 5S+ aims to reduce loss and waste.
5S 7 The 5S+ work culture in general is about the workplace. The 5S+ Work Culture Program aims to foster a culture and work environment that is neat and clean to increase productivity, safety, and comfort at work.
To implement the 5S+ work culture also means to build a habit, self-awareness, and concern for work ethics and attitudes to ensure all academicians at Universitas Sumatera Utara have personal responsibility and discipline in carrying out all the 5S+ stages
5S 8 The implementation of the 5S+ work culture will lead to savings on resources in the workplace. In the end, the continuous implementation of the 5S+ work culture program creates not only a clean and beautiful work environment or campus but also a green one that maintains environmental sustainability.
