As one of the biggest universities on Sumatra Island, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) has seen an increase in enrollment each year with sufficient growth in knowledge and technology. USU has an integrated and sufficient plan for its development which is in line with the University Strategic Plan of 2015 - 2019 and USU Long Term Plan of 2015 – 2039.

The main campus is located in Padang Bulan, a green area of 1,160,000 m2 at the center of Medan City. A new campus is located in Kwala Bekala with a 3,000,000 m2 area, 15 km from the Padang Bulan Campus. In the main campus, a 90 ha academic zone exists to accommodate almost all academic activities. USU’s education system is supported by library facilities and more than 200 laboratories. The library provides various types of learning resources both in hard and soft copies.

In addition, there are also various facilities on the main campus such as dormitories, sports arenas, homesteads, cafeterias, shops, banks, and a post office. Graduation and other academic events are held in the Auditorium and Gelanggang Mahasiswa (Student Hall). A teaching hospital was constructed on the Padang Bulan Campus since 2008 and has been operational since March 2016. The hospital has achieved a 5-star accreditation rating (paripurna) in December 2016. The main campus area is surrounded by residential and commercial areas as well as some reserved green areas.
